Why Model ALB
Alb is the mouse ortholog of human ALB and encodes serum albumin, the most abundant protein in blood plasma, produced by the liver. Albumin has been associated with maintenance of plasma oncotic pressure and with transport of many endogenous and exogenous molecules.
Albumin’s long circulating half-life is used in drug design to extend the half-life of therapeutics, and albumin is used clinically as a volume expander. Alb-deficient mice are viable with altered plasma protein handling.
Model Applications
Humanized ALB models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to study the pharmacokinetics of albumin-binding and albumin-fused therapeutics in defined experimental settings.
