Why Model APOC3

Apoc3 is the mouse ortholog of human APOC3 and encodes apolipoprotein C-III, a small secreted apolipoprotein produced mainly by the liver. APOC3 has been associated with inhibition of lipoprotein lipase and with regulation of plasma triglycerides.

Loss-of-function APOC3 variants are associated with low triglycerides, and APOC3-directed agents are used or under study for severe hypertriglyceridemia. Apoc3-deficient mice show reduced plasma triglycerides, while transgenic overexpression raises them.

Model Applications

Humanized APOC3 models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate APOC3-directed agents, including antisense and related approaches, in defined experimental settings.
