Why Model CD44
Cd44 is the mouse ortholog of human CD44 and encodes CD44, a cell-surface glycoprotein and a principal receptor for hyaluronan, expressed as multiple isoforms. CD44 has been associated with cell adhesion, migration, and signaling.
CD44, including certain variant isoforms, has been associated with cancer-stem-cell properties and drug resistance in several tumors, and CD44-directed approaches are under study. Cd44-deficient mice are viable with altered hematopoietic and inflammatory responses.
Model Applications
Humanized CD44 models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate CD44-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
