Why Model CD46
Cd46 is the mouse ortholog of human CD46 and encodes membrane cofactor protein (MCP), a complement-regulatory protein that acts as a cofactor for inactivation of complement components C3b and C4b. CD46 has been associated with protection of host cells from complement.
CD46 serves as a receptor for certain measles virus strains and other pathogens and has been associated with roles in cancer, and CD46-directed approaches are under study. In mice, Cd46 is expressed mainly in the testis, unlike the broad expression of human CD46.
Model Applications
Humanized CD46 models, which express human CD46, have been used to study CD46 biology, including as a viral receptor, and to evaluate CD46-directed approaches in defined experimental settings.
