Why Model CSF1

Csf1 is the mouse ortholog of human CSF1 and encodes macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), a cytokine that signals through the receptor CSF1R. CSF1 has been associated with the differentiation, survival, and function of macrophages and related myeloid cells.

The CSF1/CSF1R axis has been associated with tumor-associated macrophages, tenosynovial giant cell tumor, and fibrotic and inflammatory conditions, and CSF1-pathway-directed agents are used or under study. Csf1-deficient mice (op/op) show reduced macrophages and osteopetrosis.

Model Applications

Humanized CSF1 models, in which the human cytokine replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to support human myeloid-cell functions and to evaluate CSF1-pathway-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
