Why Model CX3CL1

Cx3cl1 is the mouse ortholog of human CX3CL1 and encodes fractalkine, a chemokine that exists in membrane-bound and soluble forms and signals through the receptor CX3CR1. CX3CL1 has been associated with adhesion and recruitment of monocytes and with neuron-microglia communication.

CX3CL1-CX3CR1 signaling has been associated with neuroinflammatory, inflammatory, and other conditions, and CX3CL1-pathway-directed approaches are under study. Cx3cl1-deficient mice show altered monocyte and microglial responses.

Model Applications

Humanized CX3CL1 models, in which the human chemokine replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate CX3CL1-pathway-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
