Why Model DSG2
Dsg2 is the mouse ortholog of human DSG2 and encodes desmoglein-2, a desmosomal cadherin that mediates cell-cell adhesion in epithelia and cardiac muscle. Desmoglein-2 has been associated with maintenance of tissue integrity.
DSG2 mutations are associated with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, and desmoglein-2 has roles in epithelial cancers; it also serves as a receptor for certain adenoviruses. Dsg2 mutant mice develop cardiac phenotypes resembling the human disease.
Model Applications
Humanized DSG2 models, including those carrying disease-associated alleles, have been used to study desmoglein-2 biology and cardiac disease in defined experimental settings.
