Why Model GHRL
Ghrl is the mouse ortholog of human GHRL and encodes preproghrelin, which is processed into the acylated peptide hormone ghrelin (and obestatin). Ghrelin acts on the growth-hormone-secretagogue receptor and has been associated with stimulation of appetite and release of growth hormone.
Ghrelin has been associated with regulation of food intake and energy balance, and the ghrelin system is studied as a target for metabolic and appetite-related conditions. Ghrl-deficient mice are viable with modest metabolic phenotypes.
Model Applications
Humanized GHRL models, in which the human gene replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to study ghrelin biology and to evaluate ghrelin-system-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
