Why Model GPNMB
Gpnmb is the mouse ortholog of human GPNMB and encodes glycoprotein NMB (osteoactivin, DC-HIL), a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on several cell types including macrophages and melanocytes. GPNMB has been associated with roles in tissue repair and modulation of immune responses.
GPNMB is overexpressed on melanoma and other tumors and has been studied as an antibody–drug-conjugate target; it has also been associated with Parkinson’s disease risk. Gpnmb-deficient mice show altered tissue responses in some models.
Model Applications
Humanized GPNMB models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate GPNMB-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
