Why Model HBA1
HBA1 encodes an alpha-globin subunit of adult hemoglobin; in mice the orthologous alpha-globin genes include Hba-a1 and Hba-a2. Alpha-globin combines with beta-globin and heme to form hemoglobin, which has been associated with oxygen transport in red blood cells.
Deletions and mutations affecting the alpha-globin genes cause alpha-thalassemia, and the alpha-globin locus is studied in hematology and gene-therapy research. Mouse models carrying human alpha-globin alleles have been developed to study these conditions.
Model Applications
Humanized HBA1 models, including those carrying human alpha-globin alleles, have been used to study alpha-globin disorders in defined experimental settings.
