Why Model IFNAR1
Ifnar1 is the mouse ortholog of human IFNAR1 and encodes a subunit of the type I interferon receptor, which together with IFNAR2 binds type I interferons. IFNAR1 signaling, through the JAK-STAT pathway, has been associated with antiviral and immunomodulatory responses.
Excess type I interferon signaling is implicated in systemic lupus erythematosus and related conditions, and an antibody blocking IFNAR1 is approved for lupus. Ifnar1-deficient mice are viable and show impaired antiviral responses.
Model Applications
Humanized IFNAR1 models, in which the human subunit replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate IFNAR1-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
