Why Model NGF
Ngf is the mouse ortholog of human NGF and encodes nerve growth factor, a neurotrophin that binds the receptors TrkA and p75. NGF has been associated with the development and maintenance of certain sensory and sympathetic neurons and with pain signaling.
NGF has been associated with chronic pain, and anti-NGF antibodies have been evaluated for musculoskeletal pain; NGF mutations cause a hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy. Ngf-deficient mice show loss of certain sensory and sympathetic neurons.
Model Applications
Humanized NGF models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate NGF-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
