Why Model Angptl3

Angptl3 is the mouse ortholog of human ANGPTL3 and encodes angiopoietin-like 3, a secreted protein produced mainly by the liver. ANGPTL3 has been associated with inhibition of lipoprotein lipase and endothelial lipase and with regulation of plasma lipids.

Loss-of-function ANGPTL3 variants are associated with low plasma lipids, and ANGPTL3-directed agents are used or under study for lipid lowering. Angptl3-deficient mice show reduced plasma triglycerides and cholesterol.

Model Applications

Humanized ANGPTL3 models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate ANGPTL3-targeted agents, including antibodies and nucleic-acid-based approaches, in defined experimental settings.
