Why Model BSG
Bsg is the mouse ortholog of human BSG and encodes basigin (CD147, EMMPRIN), an immunoglobulin-superfamily transmembrane glycoprotein. Basigin has been associated with induction of matrix metalloproteinases and with transport functions, and it interacts with several partner proteins.
CD147 is overexpressed on many tumors and has been associated with invasion and with roles in other conditions, and CD147-directed approaches are under study. Bsg-deficient mice show defects in reproduction and sensory function.
Model Applications
Humanized BSG (CD147) models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate CD147-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
