Why Model EPCAM

Epcam is the mouse ortholog of human EPCAM and encodes the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (CD326), a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on many epithelia. EpCAM has been associated with cell-cell adhesion and with signaling that influences proliferation.

EpCAM is overexpressed on many carcinomas and is used as a tumor marker and therapeutic target, and EPCAM mutations cause congenital tufting enteropathy. Epcam-deficient mice show intestinal defects and early lethality.

Model Applications

Humanized EPCAM models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate EpCAM-directed therapeutics, including bispecific antibodies and cell therapies, in defined experimental settings.
