Why Model F11
F11 is the mouse ortholog of human F11 and encodes coagulation factor XI, a serine protease zymogen of the intrinsic coagulation pathway. Activated factor XI has been associated with amplification of thrombin generation.
Factor XI has been associated with thrombosis while having a comparatively limited role in normal hemostasis, and factor XI inhibitors are under study as anticoagulants intended to reduce bleeding risk. F11-deficient mice are viable with prolonged clotting times and reduced experimental thrombosis.
Model Applications
Humanized F11 models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate factor XI-directed anticoagulants in defined experimental settings.
