Why Model Il17a

Il17a is the mouse ortholog of human IL17A and encodes interleukin-17A, a cytokine produced mainly by Th17 cells and other innate and adaptive immune cells. IL-17A signals through IL-17 receptor complexes and has been associated with recruitment of neutrophils and promotion of inflammatory responses at barrier tissues.

IL-17A is implicated in psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and other inflammatory diseases, and IL-17A-directed antibodies are in clinical use. Il17a-deficient mice are viable and show reduced inflammation in several disease models and altered host defense.

Model Applications

Humanized IL17A models, in which the human cytokine replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate IL-17A-targeted antibodies in immunocompetent mice.

Il17a knockout mice have been used to study IL-17-dependent inflammation.
