Why Model Il23a

Il23a is the mouse ortholog of human IL23A and encodes the p19 subunit of interleukin-23, which pairs with the p40 subunit (shared with IL-12) to form IL-23. IL-23 signals through a receptor complex and has been associated with maintenance and function of Th17 and other IL-17-producing cells.

IL-23 is implicated in psoriasis and other chronic inflammatory diseases, and antibodies targeting IL-23 (p19) or the shared p40 subunit are used clinically. Il23a-deficient mice are viable and show reduced Th17-associated inflammation in disease models.

Model Applications

Il23a knockout mice have been used to study IL-23-dependent inflammation. Humanized IL23A models, sometimes paired with IL-12B/p40 humanization, have been used to evaluate IL-23-targeted biologics in defined experimental settings.
