Why Model IL18
Il18 is the mouse ortholog of human IL18 and encodes interleukin-18, an IL-1-family cytokine that, like IL-1β, is processed from a precursor. IL-18 signals through its receptor and has been associated with promotion of interferon-gamma production and regulation of innate and adaptive immunity.
IL-18 is implicated in autoinflammatory and other immune-mediated conditions, and IL-18-pathway-directed approaches are under study; IL-18 binding protein regulates its activity. Il18-deficient mice are viable with altered interferon-gamma responses.
Model Applications
Humanized IL18 models, in which the human cytokine replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate IL-18-pathway-directed agents in defined experimental settings.
