Why Model Ms4a1

Ms4a1 is the mouse ortholog of human MS4A1 and encodes CD20, a membrane protein of the MS4A family expressed on B lymphocytes from the pre-B through mature stages. CD20 has been associated with roles in B-cell activation and calcium signaling.

CD20 is a target of antibody therapy in B-cell lymphomas, leukemias, and some autoimmune diseases, and several anti-CD20 antibodies are in clinical use. Ms4a1-deficient mice are viable and show largely preserved B-cell development with altered responses in some settings.

Model Applications

Humanized MS4A1 (CD20) models, in which the human protein replaces the mouse counterpart, have been used to evaluate anti-CD20 antibodies and CD20-directed cell therapies in immunocompetent mice.

Ms4a1 models have been used to study CD20 biology in defined experimental settings.
