Why Model Il5
Il5 is the mouse ortholog of human IL5 and encodes interleukin-5, a type 2 cytokine produced mainly by T helper 2 cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells. IL-5 has been associated with the differentiation, survival, and recruitment of eosinophils.
IL-5 is implicated in eosinophilic asthma and other eosinophil-associated diseases, and IL-5-directed antibodies are in clinical use. Il5-deficient mice are viable and show reduced eosinophil responses.
Model Applications
Humanized IL5 models, often paired with the IL-5 receptor, have been used to evaluate IL-5-targeted antibodies in defined experimental settings.
Il5 knockout mice have been used to study eosinophil biology.
