Among the hexokinases, Hk3, ortholog of human HK3, encodes the isoform with the most restricted distribution and a strongly autoinhibitory N-terminal extension, expressed chiefly in myeloid cells where it phosphorylates glucose with high affinity and pronounced substrate inhibition and has been linked to neutrophil granule biology and PPARG-driven expression rather than to bulk glycolytic flux.
