GLAST, encoded by mouse Slc1a3 and orthologous to human SLC1A3, is the EAAT1 glutamate transporter enriched in Bergmann glia, retinal Muller cells, cochlear supporting cells, and cortical astrocytes, operating as a trimeric elevator transporter that couples glutamate influx to three sodium ions and one proton with potassium countertransport plus an anion conductance contributing to glial membrane behavior.
