Kcnj16, the mouse ortholog of human KCNJ16, encodes Kir5.1, a subunit that is electrically silent on its own and functions only by heteromerizing with Kir4.1 or Kir4.2, where it converts a weakly pH-sensitive channel into a steeply pH-sensitive one through a lysine in the second transmembrane domain of its partner and through a Kir5.1-specific carboxy-terminal interface.
