Cox8c, ortholog of human COX8C, encodes a divergent, tissue-restricted paralog of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 8 family whose expression is confined to a narrow set of tissues and is far lower than that of the ubiquitous Cox8a product, making it a candidate for isoform-specific tuning of complex IV rather than a core structural requirement. Where expressed, the protein is predicted to occupy the same peripheral position on the complex IV monomer as other subunit 8 isoforms, so functional consequences should appear as modest shifts in holoenzyme stability or assembly kinetics rather than as frank deficiency. A constitutive null is usually the correct first experiment here, since baseline phenotypes are poorly characterized and viability is not in question, while reporter-tagged alleles better define genuine expression domains. Given clear redundancy with Cox8a, plan compound alleles if an isoform-null respiratory readout is required, and restrict endpoints to high-resolution respirometry in tissues where Cox8c transcript is actually detectable.

Whole body loss of Cox8c gives the clearest readout when the question is whether the gene is required at all. Follow up tissue work can still move to a conditional allele if lethality or compensation appears.
