Why model Fgf7
Fgf7, the mouse ortholog of human FGF7 and known as keratinocyte growth factor, encodes a heparan sulfate dependent ligand with strict specificity for the FGFR2b splice variant, secreted by dermal fibroblasts, submucosal stroma, and other mesenchymal cells to act exclusively on adjacent epithelium, driving keratinocyte proliferation, migration, and cytoprotective gene expression, and its recombinant truncated form palifermin is used to prevent chemoradiation-induced oral mucositis.
